Any article about fermi that doesn't even mention the huge power consumption looks fishy. Sure, it may be a few percent faster than the 5870, but that's hardly useful if it roars like a bear and melts my PC.

Well, looking at the numbers, he was completely right.

It's a soft launch, which means no one will get their hands on these for at least another 2 and a half weeks.

Looking at the numbers, it's not looking great for current games. 10-15% faster than a 5870 on average, and it uses an extra 100 watts of power! Not sure about final price, but i'm expecting these to be expensive given all the manufacturing issues nvidia is having with them and the size/complexity of this beast. these cards are actually cut down from the original design, with 1 of the SPs disabled so they can sell cards that have minor defects in parts of them.

Still, there are a few bright signs: tesselation performance looks like it could scale much, much better on the nvidia parts compared to ati. And GPGPU looks much faster as well. So if those markets take off then nvidia could be well positioned, or at least in 6 months when they're able to produce more cards in volume.

Well, looking at the numbers, he was completely right.

He also claimed that the 480 would be cut down from its original design calling for 512 stream processors. Looks he was right there, too.

This is one of the most disappointing launches I can recall for Nvidia (only surpassed by the FX series). Ati 5970 still holds the performance crown and their 58x0 series look like a better buy (100W less for 10%-15% performance deficit? Just overclock, man, you'd still come out ahead in performance/power.)

There are enough current games where the480 is not faster - there are even cases where it is beaten by a 5850 - or 5770.

The 480 only can shine when you turn up AA and AF - and then you have to deal with a monstrum that can gobble up up to 317 W - which is forbidden if you are following PCIE and ATX specs - while producing 9 sone noise.

it is even beaten by the 295 in many tests...

Looks like Nividia created a Dustbuster - again.

Oh, and it will cost 499$.
