Phoronix: The New X Stack Is Going Into Ubuntu 11.04

For those following closely the development of Ubuntu 11.04, in the process of going into the Ubuntu Natty repository this week is its new X stack. This means the latest snapshot of the unreleased X Server 1.10 and Mesa 7.10 for the open-source DRI / Gallium3D drivers. Due to the usual API/ABI breaks, this also means updated X.Org drivers are also going into the "Natty Narwhal" repository at the same time...

      regarding the new nVidia Beta:
Also, as a heads-up, I should mention that another ABI break went into the X server source tree, so xserver 1.10 RC 2 will not be compatible with the limited support in 270.18.

Yeah, who cares about an Ubuntu development update? It's not like third-party vendors and developers are going to be influenced at all by which APIs/ABIs are supported on the most popular desktop Linux distro, right?

There are more Ubuntu users then Kde users so whats the problem with the more attention.

I would know if you need something now to install extra to activate the new gallium r600 driver and if all is there what do you need to activate it, a kernel flac or just in xorg.conf driver "radeon-gallium" or what?

Know who's there even more of? Windows users! Linux users using the majority argument always end up being funny in a sad way.

Regarding the story, not news. Canonical has made it clear that post-10.04 releases will bring a lot of new stuff. The target 2.6.38 kernel has quite a few weeks before it's even released upstream!

But this is not a os-news site its a linux/hardware/benchmark/opensource site. if you look on the internet there are surely more sites that talk about windows stuff (mostly how to reinstall it because it cant be fixed ) so that works with the majority argument.

That's a ridiculous statement. KDE users from every distro are going to far outnumber the users of a single distro, no contest.

However, while i sometimes find Phoronix's Ubuntu-centric reporting annoying, i don't have any problem with this story or the minor blurb about the KDE release. This is graphics-oriented, that wasn't.

Except if the user base of that single distro have a percentage of 50%+
