Phoronix: KDE SC 4.8 May Move Screensaver To The Compositor

Just a few days ago Martin Gr??lin, the lead developer of KDE's KWin compositing window manager, wrote about the KDE view on GNOME 3.0's Mutter (their new compositing window manager). Martin has now provided some more insight, but this time it's back in the KDE world. He has shared his plans to merge the KDE screensaver with the KWin compositor for the KDE SC 4.8 time-frame...

Is this being done, in part, as a way to make KDE ready for Wayland? If they could switch the screensaver from Kwin to Wayland without too much trouble, that would be awesome, unless they intend this to be a permanent solution.

He says they will need to keep the old version for non-compositing cases.

No. That article on Wayland and screensavers talked about stuff that Wayland made possible that couldn't be done on X, but in truth, that's only true of non-composited desktops on X. There are definitely benefits in having the compositor take care of screen locking/blanking, and there's no reason KDE can't do the same thing - and likewise, Gnome Shell and Unity.
