Phoronix: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS To Target 750MB Image

The default ISO size target for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is now 750MB, which rules out burning this Linux distribution to a traditional 700MB CD, but allows for 1GB+ USB flash drives and DVDs. Plus there's some other news from the Orlando development summit happening this week...

If they did dump Banshee and Mono and all the crappy useless things that are bloated and buggy and also require Mono, they would still have no trouble fitting onto a CD.

OMGMono has been working overtime advertising Mono and .NET and Windows lately, trying to convince people that non-native software made with Microsoft API is a good thing when it has major problems and the design roadmap is being held up by upstream Mono bugs that Xamarin is not prioritizing since they don't affect it on iPhones.

I'm pretty sure Kubuntu will still fit on a CD since Mono has only ever targeted the inferior GNOME desktop with its buggy and incomplete Microsoft APIs.

One can overburn the CD, if the CD is of good quality. Or buy an 800 MB CD (I've seen these).

If it won't fit on a CD anyway and the only options would be a 1GB (at least) pendrive or a DVD..... why not make it 900MB, which will fit in any 1GB pendrive? ?.o

Because Canonical has unfortunately lost it's collective fucking mind...

Please somebody, roll the Studio release with all the language packs and EDU software and only use the Mate desktop. We can call it "Ubuntu K-12+ ESL & GED edition".

            Repackaging

Have they tried resorting to other forms of installing the packages? like a unionfs/squashfs based base and then other dpkg files?? did they see how much they could save by resorting to all this?

Good post! I'm sure they would find that 50MB to throw out if they wanted. Ubuntu starts to turn into a crap like M$ Windows.

Strange that phoronix doesn't mention Mono being removed from the CD.

Banshee will be replaced by Rhythmbox for Ubuntu 12.04. The news was confirmed during the wrap-up session of the Ubuntu Developer Summit.

Normally phoronix is aways keen on reporting on Mono

I was wrong earlier, I quoted the Fedora desktop CD ISO as being about 650 MB.

The GNOME 3 Live CD for Fedora 16 RC 5 x86-64 is 604 MB, 96 MB smaller than a CD can hold.

                    Why?

Ubuntu ships Mono and Windows applications pretending to be Linux applications. This will be rectified in 12.04 where they will ship Linux applications that are really Linux application and throw Mono under the bus. (hooray)

Ubuntu ships literally every toolkit in the known universe. OK, maybe not, but seriously. GTK+ 3, GTK+ 2, GTK# 2, QT4. Then there's the libnux crap. They're trying not to default to having useful applications like Cheese because that would bring in all of Clutter which GNOME Shell is based on but Unity is not.

Unity is a cluster**** of toolkits and odd shaped bits and pieces which have been soaked then beaten together with a hammer. It completely undermines the best thing about GNOME Shell, which is integration and unification. Removing Mono fixes the space problem for now, but they could do better if they didn't insist on their own desktop shell which is of dubious value compared to GNOME Shell in user experience.
