Currently I tend to use mplayer/mplayer2. I really prefer the GST architecture though, it is much better. I just want a no-frills player for it, something similar to mplayer.

        > IETF RFC4571 proposal, "Framing Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) and RTP Control Protocol (RTCP) Packets over Connection-Oriented Transport"

uh, ok, I mean supporting IETF RFCs is good... but why is it an RFC proposal anyway? It sounds horrible. "I know guys, lets run TCP over TCP! Or better yet, UDP over TCP! It'll be awesome!"

Eh ? RTP is in the application layer; tcp in the transport...

Gstreamer is important if you need video support in apps that are not primarily media players, but need to play media. LibreOffice for instance, or Firefox. (Firefox will play h264 encoded content in HTML5 just fine if you enable "media.gstreamer.enable" within the about:config.)

Keep on eye on mpv. It's under heavy development, but I use it as my main player.

Yeah, I wish gstreamer had better support for VDPAU. I also wish configuring plugins (like bauer sterophonic support when you're using headphones) was a lot easier.

I think Gstreamer is intended to be directshow in Linux.
However it's really interesting that every media player in Windows is using directshow (say, MPC-HC), while players in Linux are using their own frameworks.
