It turns out that writing a fresh simple reference implementation is much more easier than porting over a full fledged desktop environment with decades of dependencies on a core graphics layer while retaining compatibility. Who could have guessed that?

It'll be nice when the major distros adopt it. The sooner we stop depending on X, the better IMO. Besides, it should be easier to implement across many different platforms, as well as being easier to develop with... if I remember correctly.

But, GNOME 3.14 will be the one, right?

GNOME 3.14 has made considerable progress but there are a number of issues that will be fixed in future revisions beyond that and XWayland will be needed for other older programs for a very long time.

How long will it take for Nvidia to release Wayland drivers for desktop and mobile (Tegra) GPUs?

Indeed - who is John Galt?

Hah, looking at the names, this seems to be mostly a Scandinavian effort

Nvidia's drivers already support EGL. The proof is in Fedora 20; it is the only proprietary driver package to work on Gnome 3 because F20's Gnome 3 is now using EGL. Catalyst will break Gnome 3 and render it unusable.

Based on this, it is highly likely that proper Wayland support should come in time. At the very least, definitely well before Catalyst starts supporting EGL.
