          Can you run qemu a stand alone hypervisor or do you need KVM along with it.
          What are the downsides in running it just in virt manager, without kvm

            Well, first of all why would you want to? Seriously: If you have hardware support for kvm, why not use it? The Virtual Machine Manager gui sets up qemu-kvm by default, and it works quite well.

              Not sure why you'd want to do it, but w/o KVM the performance will be abysmal, at best.
