In celebrating 11 years since starting Phoronix to cover the Linux hardware scene, here's some fresh benchmarks of the open-source Intel / AMD / NVIDIA Linux graphics drivers. Various GPUs were tested atop Ubuntu when moving to Git with the Linux 4.1 kernel, Mesa 10.7-devel, and LLVM 3.7 SVN.

With Mesa 10.7-devel, all of the GPUs tested on Nouveau NVC0 Gallium3D encountered the window borders/decorations not rendering correctly under Unity 7 + Compiz on Ubuntu 15.04.

I hope still thats only about some basic level. It would be great if Redhat would at least pay as much radeon developers than nouvou developers. One driver that can replace for all consumers (also gamers) the bad amd proprietary blob would be a good thing. I also find that the linux community sends a horrible message to hardware vendors, if you dont support linux they pay you developers if you invest money for better linux support you get a wet hand shake...

nvidia is a driver, someone might think "without help from a binary driver" For company it is nVidia, Nvidia or nVIDIA.

But Nouveau is also fine as that company does not listen anyway

Nice testing and shows how far the open source drivers have come. Including some Radeon X and X1 series samples as well, maybe even a 9700/9800 Pro (if an AGP board is available) would have been nice. Just for old times' sake...

Yeah those cards even if best supported can't run one single benchmark mentioned in this article... let alone that those can't run Unity

I'm using that very same combination - kernel 4.1, mesa 10.7 and llvm 3.7 on my 290x. Performance is not bad compared to the proprietary driver, maybe even better (though light years behind Windows). However I do get graphical glitches in the Witcher 2 and Cities: Skylines (improper texture rendering) and stutter in Borderlands 2. The improvements of the open source driver are undeniable but the road it has to go before it closes on Windows performance is very long. It mostly goes to show we are not going to see viable AMD based Steam Machines any time soon, if ever.
