    Phoronix: Oracle Releases VM VirtualBox 5.0

    After being in public test form the past few months, VirtualBox 5.0 was officially released this morning...

    I've always preferred VirtualBox over VMWare and with 5.0 and cool things like Paravirtualization, USB 3.0, drag and drop, and disk encryption, it's pretty much a premium-grade VM product once again. The only thing really missing in my mind is support for DirectX 10+ accelerated graphics in Windows guests as supported with Parallels for Mac.

      Great stuff. VirtualBox is all the virtualization software I've ever needed.

        Xen is much much faster, but for a personal use Virtual Box is just perfect.

        USB 3-> nice ! Still need a proprietary add-on ?

        Any 3D performance increase ?

          Test and comparisons.
          We need KVM vs VBox vs VMWare on Linux as host.

            Isn't Xen mostly server-side and hardly any desktop virtualization? With VMware (or Parallels on the Mac) you get things like 3D acceleration... Xen has nothing of the sort for desktop users...unless things've changed (I've not been following their progress).

              I agree that accelerated graphic support is something on what many of us still waiting. This could be a big changer for desktop virtualization and especially for folks who needs multiboot, just for playing latest AAA games on windows. Unfortunatelly current attitude of virtualbox team towards accelerated graphic support makes me very unhappy. Maybe they one day realize how important this feature is and they change their opinion on this matter. Lets hope it would be rather soon since KVM-qemu project making some real progress in this area...

                MASSIVE performance improvements:

                Virtualbox 4.3:

                Virtualbox 5.0:

                Phoronix should do a full performance comparison between 4.3 and 5.0.

                  Did you get that after activating paravurtualization?

                    Does the new para-virtualization support means I can ditch VMWare Player?? Can I use my existing VMWare images of my old boxes??

                    Thanks a million!
