A large number of those bugs look like they are carried over from using old insecure image libraries.

I have noticed that open source projects tend to overlook the updates to the libraries they use because they think it will break their code.

Competitiveness on the programming language field have ramped up greatly and went so far to even push the "almighty" Microsoft to open-source the CLR to stay competitive. And now Zend also feeling the urge to raise the level of their game or be smashed by the competition from Facebook. Exciting times ahead!
