    Phoronix: Unity Is Working On Metal & DX12, But Not Vulkan Yet

    Aras Pranckevičius of Unity Technologies presented this week at SIGGRAPH 2015 on porting the popular Unity Engine to new APIs. While Aras has dealt with Vulkan/glNext, Unity is still monitoring the Vulkan situation and isn't yet committing to supporting it in the near-term within its game engine...

    Meanwhile, Tim Sweeney from Epic Games told me earlier this week that they're super busy at implementing Vulkan into Unreal Engine 4 right now and will have it ready in a "timely fashion".

      I also think it's pretty dangerous to think that you can lack behind as a middleware provider and implement Vulkan sometime in the future when you have competition like Unreal Engine 4. UE4 is probably already more competitive than Unity from a technology and pricing point of view.

        It makes sense that they are working on those standards that already have specs and tools for developers that are completely public. Once Vulkan is public, they'll implement it if only because it'll improve Android performance, though they'll still have to support OpenGL because not everyone will have the latest Android version and this will be an OS level change.

          Pretty sure they have insight into the spec while it develops just like all the other people that are implementing it as it develops.

              I heard that Vulkan, Metal and DirectX 12 are very similar.
              So hopefully Vulkan will follow shortly.

                Why? The performance of KSP is usually limited by the physics engine, for which the CPU single thread performance is the bottleneck. If I'm not mistaken, graphics in Unity is (or: can be?) handled in a separate thread, so the main advantage of Vulkan, lower CPU overhead for graphics, will not affect KSP performance much...

                  Cant believe they even announce such a decission publically, not exactly a selling point for unity. To be honest, not using it. We use Unreal Engine and from unofficial sources we hearx they plan to support it. Nvidia will probably support it from day one on both Windows and Linux. Hopefully we can start experimenting with it this year. We have yearly budgets, so it would be nice to have a better grasp before years end.

                    Nobody is using Unity for new games, everyone is moving to UE4. It's essentially a game engine for mobile games now.
