Phoronix: Kdenlive 15.08 Adding Long-Awaited Features

While at one point it looked like Kdenlive had a dark future, things turned around. This non-linear video editor was ported to Qt5 / KF5 and is added to KDE Applications 15.08...

Kdenlive 15.07.0 has been pretty good looking lately on my Ubuntu 15.04 64bit, but there are some serious bugs right now that make working with it extremely difficult.

Attempting to add a new track (audio or video) does not work, and will usually result in it crashing shortly after. I'm unable to create a folder in the Project Bin for quick management of project assets, and when it does occasionally work it will immediately crash upon trying to drag anything into that folder.

I find that I have to save immediately after each small change as a crash can be imminent at any moment. I also find that if I attempt to move a section of my video edits, if there is a Composite transition on any of those edits, they will likely magically disappear or suddenly jump places. This makes putting overlays or videos on top of one another in many layers extremely excruciating!

With all that said though, I am terribly glad they are continuing work on Kdenlive. I've moved away from Corel's Videostudio, and I really enjoy Kdenlive's ability to read practically ANY video file I throw at it plus the near instant timeline scrolling. The render times seem to be improved as well.

An attempt to get to the download link from this story: https://kdenlive.org/node/9442 http://download.kde.org/stable/appli...15.08.0.tar.xz returns a 403 forbidden error, the story gave an August 19th release date but was published on kdenlive.org on August 18. Did they post the story before making the code publicly available? https://quickgit.kde.org/?p=kdenlive.git shows no new commits tor the last 9 days, with kdenlive holding at 15.07.9. I use this now, though it can be crashy on large projects at the moment. The previous 15.04 release was utterly stable, but a lot of work is going on right now and I suppose it will need time to stabilize again.

Did some large video last month and kdenlive did a great job on Ubuntu 15.04. Only some transitions did look weird with some pink color. No problem to replace those, the only bug I've found.

It will be released with KDE Applications 15.08, which isn't out yet. It should be released some time today, but exactly what time isn't certain. The kdenlive developers don't have direct control of this, it is handled by the KDE Applications release managers.

If you look around you will see that no applications have a 15.08.0 tag, even though the 15.08 packages have been available to distros for almost a week. The tag will probably become visible once 15.08.0 is released. This is standard KDE policy: release the packages privately to distros early so the distros can have the packages ready when the release happens, then publish them publicly when the actual release takes place.

Does the above-stated release policy mean that what comes out today will essentially be the same as the 15.07.90 snapshot I got last week except for the name? IF so, this really should be tagged a beta release or even an alpha, as it is far buggier than 15.04 is. The file format transition means 15.04 cannot read files made by 15.07/15.08. I DID find a workaround for the worst bug: the tendency of tracks with composite transitions to move around on saving or rendering; Lock every track before each save and before rendering.
