Could someone please explain to me what OS X spotlight has to do with SMB/CIFS?

And GNOME Tracker? What does that have to do with Mac OS X as well?

No absolutely sure but afaik Spotlight tries to do a fast search on preindexed Content. To be able to do this you need something building an index of content on your samba shares, which is realized by using tracker.

Yes, the title is completely off ...

It uses tracker as an indexing implementation, but this can be considered an implementation detail of samba, it is not visible in the network protocol.

For communication between client and server, it uses an Apple proprietary protocol (maybe inherited from the Appletalk file server). Some info can be found here: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.netw...nternals/76309
The Apple protocol is completely unrelated to Microsofts MS-WSP (Windows Search Protocol), so probably no Windows client support.

There is some info how to set it up on the samba wiki: https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Spotlight

Currently, there is no Linux client support for either MS-WSP or Spotlight, so Linux clients have to fall back to crawling. Both protocols *could* be supported by one of the Desktop Search frameworks, e.g. Baloo on KDE or Tracker on Gnome.
