Why don't they use LightDM on the phone - or the other way around: Why is LightDM needed on the desktop?

I'm going to guess that it has to do with either power efficiency or compatibility on the phone and development priorities on the desktop.

LightDM is display manager for X.
Ubuntu phone does not use X, it uses Mir.

GDM used to be a display manager for X, too. Now it runs on X and Wayland and can launch both sessions.

Canonical announced Mir compatibility for LightDM years ago but apparently it's like so many of Canonical's announcements: Nothing but hot air.

I wouldn't mind a power efficient desktop, too
