Phoronix: Radeon KMS On PC-BSD/FreeBSD 10.2 Surprisingly Worked On A FirePro+DP System

While open-source AMD Linux users have largely been able to take it for granted for years that the Radeon DRM/KMS driver will at least light up their display when using an older GPU, after the Radeon KMS problems I ran into on DragonFlyBSD, I didn't expect this hardware to play nicely on FreeBSD/PC-BSD 10.2. Fortunately, I was proven wrong and this AMD FirePro graphics card driving a DisplayPort monitor managed to run nicely out-of-the-box...

Please give OpenBSD a try Michael, i.e: for GNOME 3.
    Code:
    # pkg_add gnome
    # echo 'multicast_host=YES' >>/etc/rc.conf.local
    # rcctl set messagebus status on
    # rcctl set avahi_daemon status on
    # rcctl set gdm status on
... and reboot, or rcctl start those services.

Good luck to get GCNs running on BSDs. Especially with working acceleration...

        Hi Michael,

thanks for the cool FreeBSD article. Here is a "slightly" outta date link to a list of supported ATI/AMD supported GPU's, on FreeBSD....

Systemcrasher, could usefully read the same and then retract the FUD?

        For me though....
AMD Radeon HD Rx 200 Volcanic Islands Not supported
        BooHoo!

News flash, Radeon HD 6900 is Northern Islands/Clayman not Volcanic Islands. So all it proves is FreeBSD run on outdated graphics cards.

And talking about acceleration, how stable is it? Can it run games and other graphic intensive software like Linux or does it crash? Answer: It crashes. SystemCrasher IS NOT FUDing. GreekGeek IS FUDing.

FWIW, before I posted the link to the webpage, I read it. Apparently, that did not cross your mind?

As for what games run on FreeBSD, it is a little like Linux, some do and some don't. Now, FreeBSD is not as up to date as Tux, so not as many.... Hardly a news flash.

And yes, Systemcrasher is also list FUDer....

... and reboot, or rcctl start those services.
              First of all it's:
              Code:
              # rcctl enable messagebus
              # rcctl enable avahi_daemon
              # rcctl enable gdm
Even I know more about BSD then clueless trolling BSD fanboys.

Next time specify how you do it and stop being value when you say:
              rcctl start those services.
              Code:
              # rcctl start messagebus
              # rcctl start avahi_daemon
              # rcctl start gdm
That being said, if you are on OpenBSD, you should not do those things. Here's what you should always do when you are on OpenBSD:

              Code:
              $ su
              Password:
              # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rsd0c bs=1G
It will solve all OpenBSD related problems.

                FUD

More works on Linux, less works on BSD.

Now, FreeBSD is not as up to date as Tux, so not as many.... Hardly a news flash.
                Yes keep it coming

No SystemCrasher is telling the truth. Don't shoot the messanger.

                GreekGeek.
                The really FUDer.

That syntax is undocumented, clearly you haven't read rcctl(8) or the mailing lists:

That can't be right. I play games on FreeBSD quite often. Everything from OpenRA to CoD MW2 (via WINE) to Minecraft. It seems you are wrong.
