The NV50 Gallium3D driver for pre-Fermi GPUs is still a ways out from supporting OpenGL 4.1

Don't hold your breath. I'm not completely aware of the details, but I'm fairly sure that hardware simply does not have the capability to support all the features required for OpenGL 4. Hence the official driver for these cards doesn't go beyond GL 3.3.
