Will Virgil be driver agnostic? or will it require opensource drivers. I hope it just requires the 4.4 kernel + Qemu 2.5+.

There is some information in another thread: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum...r-3d-rendering
The initial release will be GL3.3 (if host has 3.3 or later) with qemu/libvirt/spice/egl support only on open source drivers. qemu/sdl will work on the nvidia binary drivers (their desktop EGL is lacking some things).
I'm very excited to try this! Hope it will come soon on Arch Linux.

The CPU emulation speed is slow. There are companies that have today 50% efficiency at x86 to Arc translation. Maybe hardware FP, SIMD, LLVM?
