Phoronix: Why Enlightenment & Tizen Love Wayland

Longtime free software developer Carsten Haitzler, better known as Rasterman, presented at last weekend's FOSDEM conference about Enlightenment on Wayland. As part of that, with Samsung's Tizen environment using Enlightenment, they too are after Wayland as being the superior solution to X11...

Very interesting presentation. Well done! ^_^

It's simple, because wayland is a modern efficient compositor which simplifies optimizing compositing and rendering, matching very well between kernel drivers and hardware.

So...they want Wayland for pretty much the same reasons everyone else wants Wayland.

        Never would have guessed.

Guy must really love raster graphics... I think they're pretty flawed (sadly vector is also flawed, but still suitable for some things, like animation)

These talks still need to happen, because apparently people still don't get how hopeless X11 is.

Like climate change denialists, Wayland/systemd haters aren't really interested in the facts, so no number of presentations will convince them, unfortunately.

Some people still have Z80's running CPM. I'm actually happy to see Enlightenment getting the respect it deserves. That people don't want to move forward isn't something I worry about.

So so so many people just don't know. They have little to no idea how X11 works or does rendering or compositing and input work. I talk with them every day. This presentation was not intended for hard core developers who know this - it was intended as information to the far less "into graphics on Linux" people who could benefit from clarification of how things actually work. The crowds that go "oh oh but Wayland isn't a remote display system therefore it sucks and we should never drop X11" kinds of people. They see just 1 feature that is not built into Wayland protocol and then fail to see all the other good things that come along. They don't appreciate just how horrible X11 can be - even over a network. Illustrating round trips is a way to show that - X11 has lots of them. Wayland has far less.

So take it as it is intended - for the more average people who don't spend their lives focusing on graphics, compositors, WMs, toolkits etc. to get a bit of insight as to what Wayland really brings, why that is important to Tizen, and some of the things that were done.

Also remember slide decks are not verbatim scripts. They are talking points and diagrams. What was SAID often is far more than the simple content on the slides. So watch the video when it gets uploaded.
