Phoronix: NVIDIA Releases Their Third Vulkan Linux Driver

The Vulkan 1.0 specification is less than one month old and NVIDIA has already released their third Linux driver beta. Meanwhile, sadly, AMD hasn't made public their proprietary Vulkan Linux driver...

Yes, Yes, wayland compat. pls. They always had something else to work on, wonder if they will ever get there

don't be surprised if you see the premiere of Wayland compatibility in the next release stream.

AMD really needs to staff up, otherwise they will lag behind with Vulkan as they do with OpenGL.

I hope they add Wayland WSI support for their Vulkan driver, too. Looks like this has to be supported by the individual driver. Here are the Wayland bits from the Intel Vulkan driver:

The bad thing is that if NVIDIA sticks to their EGLStreams thing instead of using GBM all Wayland compositors will probably have to explicitly be able to support their approach and it won't just work out of the box with whatever Wayland compositor you want.

Just because it wasn't public, does not mean there was no work done in the area. They probably didn't want to commit to anything while Wayland was still rather volatile.

Well, AMD is mostly playing catch-up in terms of openGL whereas like good half of OpenGL extension standards has been written by nvidia people.
Basically, they not only need people implementing these things (in which case they will be always lagging), but they need to lead the development.
Vulkan should be better since it's based off Mantle developed by AMD, but nvidia seems to be on forefront in spite of the fact.
Here is quick and dirty table of OGL 4.5 extensions and (incomplete*) list of their authors:
              Extension Origin
GL_ARB_ES3_1_compatibility Piers Daniell & Daniel Koch, NVIDIA
              GL_ARB_clip_control Mark J. Kilgard (NVIDIA), ..
GL_ARB_conditional_render_inverted Brian Paul, VMware Daniel Rakos, AMD
GL_ARB_cull_distance Brian Paul, VMware Daniel Rakos, AMD Pat Brown, NVIDIA Piers Daniell, NVIDIA
              GL_ARB_derivative_control Qualcomm
GL_ARB_direct_state_access Graham Sellers, AMD Piers Daniell, NVIDIA Christophe Riccio, Unity Daniel Rákos, AMD Daniel Koch, NVIDIA Pat Brown, NVIDIA
GL_ARB_get_texture_sub_image Brian Paul, VMware Daniel Koch, NVIDIA
GL_ARB_shader_texture_image_samples Piers Daniell, NVIDIA Mathias Schott, NVIDIA
              GL_ARB_texture_barrier Jeff Bolz, NVIDIA
              GL_KHR_context_flush_control Graham Sellers, AMD
GL_KHR_robust_buffer_access_behavior Jan-Harald Fredriksen, ARM Jeff Bolz, NVIDIA Kenneth Russell, Google Pat Brown, NVIDIA
              GL_KHR_robustness Daniel Koch, NVIDIA
GL_EXT_shader_integer_mix Matt Turner, Intel Ian Romanick, Intel

While this table was parsed by quick and dirty script and is certainly inaccurate, there is a lot more "Green" than "Red".

Can we stop to write controversial articles for clicks? "Sadly"? We *know* why AMD is delayed and we know it is coming. It was uncalled for (and this is coming from Nvidia user).

And kudos for Nvidia keeping up with updating their Vulkan driver.

Wayland already works under X using Nvidia Binary. I send news to a few web sites, but no one has so far put it into news section yet.

bleh, think my comment went directly into spam (or something, unapproved, something, disappeared) for linking like 10 extensions, fck, why I even bothered writing it (it had sexy table of OGL 4.5 extensions showing that nvidia co-authored most of them whereas AMD did very little in terms of creating the standards and make it easier to implement them).
