Phoronix: Ubuntu 16.10 Isn't Going To Use Mir / Unity 8 By Default

Well, another setback for Unity 8 and Mir. Kicking off the Ubuntu Online Summit for Ubuntu 16.10, it's been confirmed that the Unity 8 desktop and Mir display server will not be the default for the desktop spin...

What the actual fuck. I can't watch the video now, I'm a work. Did they say why? This doesn't make sense. Who cares if it in a polished/feature-complete release.... it's a non-LTS......

Reinventing the wheel is hard. Who would have thought?
But let's look at the bright side, once it's finally done, maintenance will be a breeze, because every open source developer will have knowledge of Mir. Oh, wait...

And then drop it for wayland... like they did with systemd, rather than continuing with upstart.

Try using the Unity 8 session as it is right now on the desktop. It's definitely not in shape to be the default yet, but by 16.10, it's likely to be far more usable than it is now.

In other words, this really isn't that big a deal.

That's what people have been saying for over 3 years and why it is such a big deal.

Cant see how Mir or Wayland will be default instead of Xorg in the next 2 years on any major distro.
