I thought OpenSSL had other issues that made the fork viable?

I'm surprised by the negativity on this. LibreSSL is a good thing and everyone should switch to it, the reasons being OpenSSL had to assume that the OS provides nothing and so they implement a great deal that normal operating systems today provide such as random etc. It's a better model to have the OS provide such things in their own way. A great deal of the security improvements in LibreSSL have been as a result of simply deleting old and obsolete code. As a general rule you can trust OpenBSD to get it right on matters of security (at the cost of everything else naturally). M$ can pump their money as hard as they want.. doesn't mean they can make a secure project.
