Phoronix: RoundCube-Next Is Woefully Behind Schedule

After raising more than $103,000 USD last year via crowd-funding the RoundCube-Next web-based email client doesn't really appear to be going anywhere...

That Rainloop project mentioned in the reddit comments looks interesting.

For what it's worth, RoundCube is already very good and a "new responsive UI" would almost certainly make it worse for actual users, even if it looks more Web 3.0. Responsive webdesign is a sham, and when done correctly it basically ends up as two or three completely different UIs hidden behind @media queries.

Almost every crowdfounding campaign is a fraud anyway…

Regarding "responsive design". Creating a single complex design which scales across all devices and works well is impossible, it will always be a compromise. Multiple UIs is the only way to have a good solution across all devices.

I wouldn't say they're all frauds, but crowdfunding certainly opens the door to fraudsters as there's no recourse whatsoever for those who put money on a project which then fails to deliver.

But then again there's a difference between fraud and incompetence. I'm sure plenty of failed projects failed due to poor project management, more so than a deliberate intent to defraud. At least from the little information we have so far, it sounds like this is the probable situation here with Roundcube Next.

Agreed. Windows 10 is a perfect example of such a compromise UI.

I'm a Roundcube user, and I'm perfectly happy with the current UI. I don't really see a need for some whiz bang "modernization" effort. Which is why I didn't contribute to RC-Next. It seemed like an answer in search of a question.

They got the money, as happens when crowdfunding successfully completes.
