Phoronix: Don't Expect An Open-Source NVIDIA Vulkan Driver Anytime Soon

Besides Nouveau developers being frustrated by NVIDIA's signed firmware blobs, at XDC2016 they also made other remarks about their focus on OpenGL and performance while Vulkan support isn't expected anytime soon...

"Don't Expect An Open-Source NVIDIA Vulkan Driver Anytime Soon" -> There isn't a set date for AMD open source Vulkan driver yet, so why would anyone be expecting one for Nvidia?

I do not think at this point anyone is expecting anything opensource from nvidia. However for AMD things look good because vendor is actively working on driver. As for nouveau.. I simply feel sorry for those guys.

This is not about nvidia, but about nouveau guys sayng not to expect anything from them regarding Vulkan.

While there isn't an official date from AMD, there are already community drivers showing good progress... RADV
Also since AMD is opensource firendly, at least we can have hope... seems legit, at least to me...
So the correct answer, for me, is: why should we ever expect any nvidia open source driver?

If you would look past "AMD is our saviour, Nvidia is evil", you'd see I said mostly the same thing. AMD is open source friendly, but they still don't have open source Vulkan, thus expecting open source Vulkan for Nvidia is downright unrealistic at this time.

"Nouveau developers" isn't a closed group. What if someone jumps in and makes a vulkan driver? I'm sure they won't reject it just for the sake of rejecting it.

I'm fine with this roadmap (albeit, I don't use nvidia on any of my Linux PCs). Right now, there aren't enough games out there that take advantage of Vulkan, and as far as I know, all the ones that do also support OpenGL. So, it's like like nouveau users are totally missing out.

Because as far as I understand, there's already an official AMD Vulkan driver, just not an open source one. To my knowledge, AMD is not working on an open-source one, so obviously they won't have a release date for it.

Even so, with AMD having more documentation out, it is expecting they'll get there first, right?

I agree with your assessment of Vulkan titles, but I cannot help to notice Linux is about to miss the opportunity of presenting itself as a Vulkan ready platform. With support in place, maybe more developers would be inclined to see how easy/hard it is to make their games run on Linux. Though closed source support may fill that gap quite nicely, too.
