KDE is used by many people, it's popular. Therefore, Valve is showcasing a real-life scenario, which is a good thing.

      Mainly because KDE is good?

If Valve likes KDE. Why don't they give support to Steam systray on KDE?
when one close steam, the application is minimized instead close to tray.

Because you can turn of compositing with a simple strg alt f12. Can somebody confirm who saw the video? There would be no animations like windows fading in /out.

Because it's super easy to toggle the system compositor in current KWin, Alt-Shift F12. Could have been any non-composited desktop at this point in time, that won't be an issue when the HMD display can be removed from the desktop with display acquisition Vulkan WSI in-progress extensions.

Where do you get the idea it's Kubuntu and not just KDE installed on any other distribution? I can't see anything in the image that tells it's Kubuntu.

Probably because of personal preference, just like every user out here.

You can add "support" for the KDE system tray to steam by setting an environment variable.
                Code:
                STEAM_FRAME_FORCE_CLOSE
It would be great if they implemented left clicking on their icon, though. Not present in appindicator, but there's still a dbus signal, AFAIK.

Pretty happy to see them running KDE, however. It shows that Unity isn't the only one to get some love (as well as the GNOME-based SteamOS desktop).

No need for any conclusions here. My guess is that this is an early demo, so it's running on a development machine, which is why it's an Ubuntu rather than SteamOS. Why KDE? I think there is no specific reason, it's just that the developers preferred to do their development on KDE. Towards release SteamOS and standard Ubuntu will continue to be Valve's highest priority.

Maybe he got it from Daniel Blair's tweet hashtag #kubuntu?
