Phoronix: Feral Planning For Linux Game Ports With Vulkan In H1'2017

Sadly the upcoming Deus Ex Linux port will only be using OpenGL while the macOS port is using Metal and the Windows game supports Direct3D 12. But on the bright side, Feral Interactive is planning for Vulkan Linux game ports in the first half of next year...

At least we have an indication now. Still hopeful that Deus Ex will get Vulkan...

From my understanding they announced to implement Vulkan for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in the first half of 2017 while the current implementation is based on OpenGL.

After they have done Mad Max, Feral should now do Just Cause 3 @ Vulkan. Avalanche Studios and Intel actually have had released a PDF slide showing Just Cause 3 @ DX12:

But they never released a DX12 patch for Just Cause 3.

Would be awesome if Feral would release Just Cause 3 @ Vulkan for Linux now.

I'm interested to see how well Vulkan can be utilized by smaller companies for Linux ports when there isn't a DX12 rendering pipeline that they can piggyback on.

Vulkan is preferred, however from a business standpoint OpenGL does make sense until they iron things out.

It is very easy to convert a game from D3D12 to Vulkan and near easy from D3D11 to Vulkan. But from D3D12 to OpenGL it's near impossible.

Objectively Vulkan isn't fully supported on all potential platforms yet, so OpenGL ports, no matter difficulties, make sense for now. But any DX12 game ported to Vulkan would be awesome test case for Feral, so fingers crossed.
