Seems like a prudent move from the distro perspective.

It's a little unfortunate that these UIs have embraced using GL. Used to be that GL was only used by games, where hanging/crashing/not working/etc, while undesirable, was an accepted reality. But now, everyday applications have started using it, which puts very different reliability requirements on the library. Kinda wish there were an "off" button for that (or even better, an "on" button with it off by default).

sure, but it is nouveaus fault to crash the system, and it is actually an issue we should fix anyway, even if desktop would not use OpenGL.

The honesty of this Noveau developer is an example to us all.

But that was kind of feature adventage of Linux to install all drivers by default over Windows 95 back then

Well, Plasma does have an off button for it. Judging by this https://www.dennogumi.org/2016/10/th...es-we-deserve/ i thought things were good to go for OpenSuse, but I guess there must be other desktop software (Qt based?) that has the same kinds of problems?

isn't that funny that misbehaving driver for a graphic card can, pretty much- from the normal user perspective- take the whole system down?
                funny- sorry, I meant- sad.

Exactly. The problem in KWin and Plasma is fixed in KDE and even in openSUSE Leap 42.2 RC2, but since it's a Nouveau issue and there might be other software affected by it (Qt based or not, the problem is unrelated to the toolkit used), it was decided to disable Nouveau 3D support anyway (althought users can enable it if they want easily).

There is a long list of drivers that MUST be working or the whole system is unusable, GPU is only one of many, but probably the most complex.
