Edit: I missed it before, but perhaps they'll try a late transition? 1.19RC2 landed yesterday in experimental https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/xorg-server.

Thanks for the advice, but... I already run testing on other systems I have, so I know the drill. However, on my main laptop I prefer the stable channel.

It looks notable missings would be MariaDB 10.1+ and PHP 7.1.
Also the partial transition to OpenSSL 1.1 will be difficult, with most packages still keeping 1.0.2 and possibly delay the release.

xserver 1.19 will be there, that is sort of compact ... this first freeze only stops introducing huge transitions.

Last time I was in the transition (Jessie was testing), testing and sid pretty much froze together with the next-stable, updates were just not coming.

That will be again but as of february 2017. when full freeze is there, not now.

In full freeze you get only manual upgrades, testing basically became next-stable or de facto beta stable... While in the same time with Sid it is the same for existing packages, but new packages are allowed to came in and so on.

What about plans for newer kernel? Currently it's stuck with 4.7.8. Also, I'd prefer Mesa 13 to be in.

Kernel 4.8 is available in Sid, mesa 13 is in experimental... if you asking about testing, that always has delay

Release is planned with 4.10 kernel, for mesa i am not sure probably it will be 13 last point, but maybe even 14 (or whatever that will be versioned on future).
