    Very interresting, thx Michael.

I am surprised that "ctrl-F" "linux" shows no result in the whole article linked anyway...

To be exact 498/500 Systems run some kind of Linux, 2 run still AIX, but days are counted...

An excellent showing for Linux, although in most of these supercomputers Linux as you would recognize it is being used as the management and load distribution frontend.

The actual compute nodes themselves are running either an incredibly stripped-down version of the Linux kernel with just enough functionality to run the compute workloads [Knights Landing being a good example] or even less than that in some instances like the P100 GPUs that obviously crunch data but don't run any OS directly.

Yes I saw it in the systems list, but none of the article linked make mention to Linux... incredible.

They don't make mention of the fact that the chips are made out of silicon either. It's basically assumed at this point so it's not really "news".

So when can we get hold of SunWay CPU based servers/workstations?

Apparently, the SW1600 is a 16 core DEC Alpha derivative.

Found some better information from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEC_Alpha
                  • Sunway TaihuLight at Chinese National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi. Machine: Sunway TaihuLight MPP. CPU: 40,960 SW26010 (256+4 cores/CPU, 1.45 GHz). Rmax=93PFlops, Rpeak=125PFlops.
                  • Sunway BlueLight at Chinese National Supercomputing Center in Jinan. Machine: Sunway BlueLight MPP. CPU: 8575 SW1600 (16 cores/CPU, 21164A EV-56, 975 MHz). Rmax=795.9TFlops, Rpeak=1070.2TFlops.[15]
So the Top SC uses DEC Alpha derived 260 core CPUs. With 4 full/management (big) cores running the OS, and 256 compute (little) cores dispatched through OpenACC.

The SW26010 has its own page here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SW26010

A workstation based on a handful of these could be interesting!
