Hope Chromium will soon have native support for Wayland and be built with Wayland enabled.

In Ubuntu 16.10 there is still no Wayland support in Chromium. Neither in Firefox. Neither in Electron framework (hence Spotify and Atom, etc).

Fortunately in the meantime, chrome/chromium works fairly well with xwayland in Fedora 25 right now.

Chromium works just fine natively on Wayland with GNOME 3.22 otherwise I wouldn't be able to start it when I use the NVIDIA driver with the EGLStreams patches for Mutter, since NVIDIA doesn't support Xwayland, yet.

Yes, it works under XWayland on Ubuntu 16.10 too.
But if I have to run my applications in XWayland then its no point running Wayland then I might as well run X.Org Server instead.

I need the most commonly used applications to run natively on Wayland, which for me is the web browser, so Chromium or Firefox.

Is that under Ubuntu 16.10 or what?

As we talk about wayland and xwayland, has anyone an idea if Emacs and wine are planning to support wayland in near future?

Emacs is a big one for me too. They're on GTK+ 3 so it shan't be too far off, but maybe it still is. One obvious thing is changing the code which detects whether you have a graphical display or not. It won't even try to do a graphical instance if DISPLAY is unset.

Does anyone know why would be necessary for a driver to support a specific Wayland client?

I.e. XWayland is a client to the Wayland compositor, right?

Just like an X Server running on Windows or macOS would be a client to the respective platform's UI system. I doubt there is any special driver support for X servers there either.

                    Cheers,
                    _
