Phoronix: Libav Now Supports VA-API HEVC Accelerated Decoding

For users of libav, the latest development code now supports hardware-accelerated HEVC/H.265 video decoding with the Video Acceleration API (VA-API)...

I guess this 10-bit thing is good for HDR. Now there is a technology called HDR10 too.

Does FFMPEG already support this? Not very many distros are using libav these days

Yes, since quite a long time now.

Skylake has 8bit decoding, Kaby Lake has both 8bit and 10bit decoding.

Yay, that's cool! I was using a plugin on chromium which tries to not use VP9 video on Youtube (because vaapi didn't support this format), but the problem is that newly uploaded videos seems to be VP9 only, which is lagging. And now VP9 acceleration is coming, great!

Michael: Are you going to post news about FFmpeg too? Because there's a lot!

Yes, but some people still look into the forse LibAV. I'm not sure why, FFMpeg gets more features and earlier.

-There's talks about hardware acceleration since late 2012, first version of the page dates from more than two years and half (10/05/2014). There's a document about hardware acceleration in FFMpeg.
                - 30/012012: The FFmpeg/Libav situation
                - Popular distributions like Debian finally chosed FFMpeg over LibAV:
                * Why Debian returned to FFmpeg, Debate: libav-provider ffmpeg. There's an Official Statement
                - Other distros choose FFmpeg too: 5/6/2015 (MotionEyeOS bugtracker)FFMPEG vs. LIBAV.
                - youtube-dl user prefer FFmpeg too: Why prefer libav(avconv) over ffmpeg?
                - MPV recommends FFMpeg, but works on both.
                - A dead fork of MPV explains why choose FFMpeg in FFmpeg versus Libav.
                - This document explains about VAAPI hardware acceleration on both FFmpeg and LibAV: Using VAAPI's hardware accelerated video encoding on Linux with Intel's hardware on FFmpeg and libav.
                - FFmpeg is polite but notices confusion with Libav.
This gist contains instructions on setting up FFmpeg and Libav to use VAAPI-based hardware accelerated encoding (on supported platforms) for H.264 (and H.265 on supported hardware) video formats).

                - People recommends FFmpeg, some developer blame Windows support of consider Libav as "the stable branch but less featured version of FFmpeg: 2012-2016 Why would I choose Libav over FFmpeg, or is there even a difference?, 3-24-2015: FFmpeg vs. Libav - And many other questions: FFMpeg is recommended.

                - The reason of Libav is simply: HATE and HATE.

I see as really recommended to have a very up to date FFMpeg. There's a PPA for getting an updated FFMpeg in Ubuntu and derivates. Gentoo and Archlinux have no issues since 1800

wasn´t there talk about a re-union of libav and ffmpeg earlier this year?

is there the possibility to get VPx hardware acceleration on chrome/chromium since HD VGA!?
