Skylake has 8bit decoding, Kaby Lake has both 8bit and 10bit decoding.

Yay, that's cool! I was using a plugin on chromium which tries to not use VP9 video on Youtube (because vaapi didn't support this format), but the problem is that newly uploaded videos seems to be VP9 only, which is lagging. And now VP9 acceleration is coming, great!

Yes, but some people still look into the forse LibAV. I'm not sure why, FFMpeg gets more features and earlier.

I see as really recommended to have a very up to date FFMpeg. There's a PPA for getting an updated FFMpeg in Ubuntu and derivates. Gentoo and Archlinux have no issues since 1800
