    As someone who has really only worked with files such as .obj or .3ds, why hasn't something like this been done 10+ years ago? Or has there been other compressed 3D model files but they just haven't been used yet?

      10+ years ago the concept of streaming 3D assets online wasn't really relevant. About other compressed formats, there is glTF from Khronos, which would be nice to see compared to Draco instead of gzip.

        It has, usually games compress the model files in .zip or other archives, or use custom compressed model formats.
