With switching back over to the GNOME desktop, Ubuntu is migrating to Wayland by default as presumed. But Mir is to be maintained for IoT use-cases, according to previous comments by Shuttleworth. However, it looks like multiple developers from the small Mir team were sent packing and there's been no public commits to Mir in the past week...

Is it safe to say that Wayland won? Not until apps like FF, LibreOffice and Chrome run on Wayland natively and by default.

Yes until Steam games support it... I use Unity7 every day, Gnome's 3 workflow is not smooth enough for me.

? The article is not about unity its about mir. So if canonical would have opposed to gnome 3 they would made unity based on wayland. But they opposed to wayland. So gnome is no reason for mir at all.

To the Topic: So I understand that this is hard for the people involved, but if you choose a job that goal is stupid you might have to pay the price to be unemployed in the future. Now we are in a place that we try to find reasons to keep mir alive for some jobs apperently. Please keep the normal stupidity of business and politics out of opensource projects. Like people try to attack linus on the kernel mailinglist for not PC language.

Its absolute fine if you work for horrible companies like Microsoft and be PC, but if you create something important empowering for humanity as the linux kernel or GNU and you are not PC about it, you are horrible.

I am shure Microsoft is 100% femnazi compatible, but stop focusing so much on the means and start focus on the ends.

Mir was a bad goal, so it never should have existed in the first place, keeping it alive so that some people get not unemployed and searching for justifications for that makes no sense.

If you care about people that get unemployed dont try to create bullshit-jobs for them so you can excuse to pay them money for living just pay them money for living (universal basic income)

They could do better than Gnome, without creating their own Wayland clone. KDE already do that.

They took on too much. They could have done the phone and Unity 8, but taking on Mir was too much.
I would assume there would have been some design limitations/challenges by going with a Wayland server instead of Mir, but Mir should have died off in the early days when it was clear that no one was interested in using it besides canonical.
