While the ROCm OpenCL code was recently open-sourced, that new Radeon OpenCL code only supports newer GPUs like Fiji and Polaris and experimental support for "GFX7" GPUs like Hawaii. Due to this newer OpenCL stack, AMD hasn't been investing in the "Clover" Gallium3D state tracker for providing OpenCL within Mesa. But there are at least some independent developers interested in still working on this older OpenCL code for previous Radeon GPUs, including pre-GCN hardware with R600g...

I was never able to compile pyopencl, so it never really worked. Too bad I'd love to use it. On R600 driver on AMD trinity A8m

It's not. AFAIK, just works for some workloads, but last check still not enough for any of my usual CL benchmarks.

I am using clover for einstein at home science calculations on R9 270 - it works OK, CL version 1.1 (the seti at home is not working).

The clover on old HD 5570 does not work at all - no app worked (also in clinfo as 1.1), so i installed ubuntu 14.04+catalyst. I can do seti at home and einstein at home

On RX 480 I can use ROCm, to get CL version 1.2 and can do einstein at home, but not seti at home.

I got the impression most people who needed OpenCL on hardware this old were better off with fglrx. From what I recall, OpenCL performance on those drivers has been pretty much the only redeeming quality about them. Though I do see a need for Clover, the fact it isn't complete makes this very niche group of people even more niche.

It's basically always been useless for anything other than a simplified benchmark.

People can't use it, because it's kinda unfinished even for darktable and GIMP. But consider this: most of AMD's APU on people hands is not GCN-based as far I know. I guess it not good for OpenCL adoption in end-user apps if there will be less devices capable of running OpenCL.
