I am like that, i don't recommend anything until it is released... because i know there are kids/teens who have no idea

Otherwise if you are experienced, master of commandline, etc... you can install it at any time and it will be quite usable

If I am not mistaken, after install Debian testing (Stretch), you can choose which update path you want to take:
If you set it to "testing", you will start to roll again after the development freeze is over. This way, you will be getting the updates that will become Debian 10.
If you set updates to "stretch", then you will update to the full, stable Debian 9.0 release, and get the updates that Debian 9 receives.

Use Debian testing, then you have to never ever care about os releases. Oipaf ppa and Padoka ppa do work with Debian testing but not stable. Install link is below and after installation, change the repository from stretch to testing to have a rolling release os.

And look if 9.0 is available for download at top right corner, download, put on usb flash drive, install and that is it... 80% of Debian users do exacty that and really for majority nothing else is needed Of course, attention on intallation steps even on very first screen as there are varying paths possible there.

Of course vocal minorty as always will be vocal minority, for these there are probably 50 other diferent solutions, installation flavors... even infinite if you want

Debian maintainers make bad choices constantly, Firefox works with pulseaudio only and uses more ram than Google Chrome. Another flops in the default install is to use networkmanager instead of wicd, not enabling desktop autologin, not installing sudo and setting Synaptic to need a password.

well, I have firefox installed without pulseaudio and... it works!
please don't use networkmanager or wicd, the /etc/network/interfaces file has all we need
desktop autologin is a self-destructive insecurity measure
be nice, stop using sudo to get root, "su -" is the right way
synaptic is awful, aptitude do it best

Latest Firefox version, there is pulseaudio support only.

Debian Stretch, Testing and Sid uses FF ESR by default, 45 and 52 ESR is builded with alsa enabled. So by default, without pulseaudio users wouldn't see a problem, but libpulse might be requirement for diversity of general purpose operating system you use where bloat is considered normal currently it is not in current Debian's ESRs

And more bloat to come as world is crazy, so you can be pretty sure After FF 57 nothing will be the same, but that is upstream decision not much Debian maintainer can do there.
