Phoronix: FBDEV Is Still Seeing Improvements With Linux 4.14

It has been five years since a call was made to deprecate Linux FBDEV back during LPC 2012. Five years later while there are now more DRM and V4L2 drivers, FBDEV is still alive and kicking within the mainline later...

The FBDEV situation is between ludicrous and pathetic. Please kill it with fire. KMS or die!

Please make use KMS even for legacy/retro/weird/niche platforms and forget about hopeless Linux FORKS that don't contribute back to upstream, they should use BSD kernels instead. A big (negatively) F* all the makers and users of these forks too, including Android Linux kernels too from Google to every Android device vendor in he planet.

I also got very deceived about KMSCon, libtsm and other related projects dying as well. I had hopes about a complete modernization of Linux graphical and console/terminal subsystems, but they finally only joked at us.

What happened? What's happening? Any hopes?

Michael, upstream FBDEV is officially deprecated and is kept in the maintenance only mode, no new FBDEV drivers are being accepted (you should write DRM drivers for new hardware). Also number of changes is orders of magnitude smaller than DRM or V4L2 ones and is mainly caused by the evolution of the rest of the kernel.
