Also, it has to have mainline linux drivers. No binary blobs. It has to work out of the box.

Just a straight controller with 8 channels is going to next to impossible to find. Most will have raid capabilities and as such cost a bit more. You might want to look at the RocketRaid 2320. Keep in mind that most of the cards you will find with that connectivity will more then likely require a PCI-X slot or a 4x PCI-e slot. There are also a few others at Adaptec.
I already saw it, but it seems it has proprietary driver with open source wrapper (and so they claim to have open source drivers :mad: )
It's not a problem, I have a free 8x slot.
Which ones? I do not want to spend 500$
What about a Dell Perc 5/i? It seems quite cheap (about 150$).
If performance is not so important, get a Silicon Image 4-port card and a 5x SATA Port Multiplier.
