SnailFlesh could rephase that to "free from software freedom and open code"
No Problem. Meego source code is still available. Can be forked.
Yea, the only proprietary part in it is the UI. It's a necessary evil, as they can use it as a bargaining chip right now. Possibly will be open-sourced later, and also nothing is stopping people from using a different UI.
It's really awesome to see such a variety of hardware running Mer. And I can't wait to see what hardware Jolla's new phone will have.
Hope they'll produce something that will compliment the quite nice UI and won't cut corners here and there trying to compete with lower end stuff. High DPI screen is a must IMO.
Another thing is the ecosystem they are trying to built. It will be sad to end up like Android where every mfg uses a different version of it and devices don't get updated to the latest stuff.
Their "ecosystem" (I don't like that word in this context, as I'm a student in the actual Ecology :) ) is the entirety of MeeGo apps, and it should support a lot of GNU/Linux apps with relative ease. As for the whole system, aside from locking the bootloader, there should be nothing manufacturers could do to lock it down. And it makes no sense to do so. Sailfish OS is nothing more than Mer + Sailfish UI, and you can follow every commit of Mer.
does that UI remind anyone else of win8's tiles?
For the critics in this thread - What do you expect them to do? What are their options right now? I really don't see your criticism as constructive in any way or give them a path to put food on the table for their families.
For everyone else - Sailfish will use Myriad Alien Dalvik so it will be able to run most Android apps plus I have a feeling they or hackers will help along the libhybris project once a community starts forming/gaining momentum up around this OS which will happen since Android hackers will crossover and linux hackers also.
