I hadn't thought of it like that. I guess this work is pretty useless;)

You just ARE NOT PAYING ATTENTION, are you???
You think the whole universe revolves around you and your desktop
You have no mental abilities to comprehend the concept of an embedded linux system
it is beyond the abilities of your puny mass of brain cells to imagine the existence of computers whose memory is constrained by cost or power or size considerations.
why do you bother commenting?
Yes my friend your radeon driver may be smaller but it's also useless. As in totally fucking useless if you try a game. And yet the fglrx even if it's huge as a codebase doesn't seem to eat that much memory. How could that be? Easy! It doesn't fucking load all the code because it doesn't need all the codepaths (it most likely depends on what graphics card you have), and second of all, it's not the code that takes up lot of ram, it's the data. For example in a game most of the data takes up the ram, not the dll's or the .so's.
And even if fglrx were to eat 300 MB I would accept it if I want to play games. Because if you play games most likely you close all the background processes to make room for the game. And if you want to play today's games and have an issue with 300 MB that the driver takes then you didn't have a chance in the first place.
What I don't like is when I open a pidgin, a nautilus, a rhythmbox and a chromium and the memory shoots to 2 GB. That is sloppy programming.
And to see just how much of an idiot you are consider this: the graphics driver is one of the most optimized pieces of software in your computer. So something tells me that pig of driver from AMD is actually quite slim for what it does. And it does a lot. In fact, from how you talk about it something tells me you can't program shit since if you were any good you would realize how stupid is to consider that the graphics driver is poorly optimized. Why do you think it has much more performance than your radeon open source driver that you hold in such high regards? Because of sloppy programming? Do us a favor and shoot yourself.
You just lag the ability to make logical conclusions within relative facts.
An example: Is it useless to write bullshit to you?
validation of the assertion:
Case1: Its bullshit what I’m writing here
Case2: Its not bullshit what I’m writing here.
If we ask you then the case 1 is right
On the other side and there is the failure of your logic: In your opinion The radeon driver is useless and this is a GOD-LAW for you.
But i use the radeon driver to write bullshit to you! This means its not useless by definition within the relatively usefulness for ME!
I'm 100% sure you lag the ability to understand this logical conclusion.
Ask your Borg collective to fix your brain!
Haha. I use the radeon driver. It's useless if I start a game. But if I don't it's ok. I would rather use fglrx for max performance but Ubuntu 12.10 no longer packs fglrx for my graphics card since it's EOL'ed. I am not saying nobody should use radeon. I am saying that for games fglrx is the best. I am also saying that it should be installed by default since most users new to linux don't know about it and could end up with the impression that linux has worse performance than windows. It would be nice if the radeon driver would have the same performance as the proprietary one but it's simply not the case. And until it does I just say that a desktop distro should default to proprietary for now.
Also, what does this have to do with the current thread?
I am not cheap. The computer works fine, so we don't throw it away. If people say it's an exercise in macho behaviour, then I have to slightly agree. Installing Linux on it made it much more useful despite it's aging processing capabilities. So, therefore, we continue using it.
However, it doesn't support SSE2. This is a hardware capability. Only Office 2013 and Windows 8 have a hard requirement on that specific piece of technology.
So, therefore (and in my opinion), we should continue using it until it cannot sufficiently handle tasks that only Windows 8 and Office 2013 can handle (as an example of course). Because THAT, again in my opinion, justifies a hardware upgrade.
As for BO$$, necro-lover and frantaylor: Please, take your fingers out of your ears and stop doing 'lalalala' while at it mkay? Please respect each others opinion, how boldly stated it may appear to you.
fglrx is very buggy and unstable in comparison. Would you really like new users get the image that linux is just as crashy as Windows, only because of AMD's blob being preinstalled?
You should also quantify your game argument. If I see 50% of the fps, using 0.5% of the lines of code, its efficiency beats that of fglrx by a huge amount.
