Yes my friend your radeon driver may be smaller but it's also useless. As in totally fucking useless if you try a game. And yet the fglrx even if it's huge as a codebase doesn't seem to eat that much memory. How could that be? Easy! It doesn't fucking load all the code because it doesn't need all the codepaths (it most likely depends on what graphics card you have), and second of all, it's not the code that takes up lot of ram, it's the data. For example in a game most of the data takes up the ram, not the dll's or the .so's.Quote:

Haha. I use the radeon driver. It's useless if I start a game. But if I don't it's ok. I would rather use fglrx for max performance but Ubuntu 12.10 no longer packs fglrx for my graphics card since it's EOL'ed. I am not saying nobody should use radeon. I am saying that for games fglrx is the best. I am also saying that it should be installed by default since most users new to linux don't know about it and could end up with the impression that linux has worse performance than windows. It would be nice if the radeon driver would have the same performance as the proprietary one but it's simply not the case. And until it does I just say that a desktop distro should default to proprietary for now.Quote:
