I don't think my hardware is all that rare. And no, I don't have an X-fi. I wouldn't touch creative with 10ly pole.

I do think it would be nice if fglrx was dropped on linux altogether. The radeon driver is better in every way except for opengl/glsl and power management. For now, my temporary solution is running...
What is your vlc version, hardware setup, and your linux flavor?
lol yeah it's frustrating at this point. The open source radeon driver is so badass compared to fglrx in every way except for power management and glsl/opengl. I wouldn't have cared 2 years ago...
Mplayer and VLC still cause X to crash for me on Fedora 16 with KDE. This occurs for me on my Radeon 3200HD netbook and my crossfire'd 5770s on my desktop.
All I can say is that my experience with the AMD driver hasn't been horrible. My biggest compliant is the bad 2D acceleration and the fact that things start slowing down when you are running multiple...

I have the exact same problem with Fedora 15 and KDE 4.6. I completely removed the 11.8 fglrx modules before installing 11.9. I reinstalled 11.8.
