I'm using a Radeon 9700 on ubuntu 9.04 and just compiled the latest xf86-video-ati driver from git. The new driver makes the whole system freeze after some seconds of using/accessing the new textured...
at least on r300 cards it _is_ supported. i can enable s-video on my radeon 9700 via xrandr and apart from some small problems (some colors are replaced by noise) it works.
there won't be gpu accelerated h264 decoding for linux in near future. even if there was support in the driver - the players couldn't use it yet.
to lower cpu usage i suggest you get the latest...
fglrx doesn't accelerate any video decoding, neither mpeg1/2 nor h264.
exa + composite is working really great now on my radeon 9700. no matter whether i use compiz or the old xcompmgr - scrolling and blending is f***ing fast and keeps the cpu almost idle.

in the current driver version the image corruption when moving a texturedvideo window partially off-screen (without composite) is fixed when moving the window out at the right or bottom border.
but...
latest commit made the checkboard pattern on radeon 9700 disappear, texturedvideo is useable now :)
btw: this also fixed exa-accelerated rotation.
