I was wandering the same. I think it makes sense to compare them with bumblebee installed. That should cut about half of the consumpltion.

For me most the hardware I've had since I run exclusively Linux (about 8 years) worked out of the box. The problem is that usually the ones that don't work inmediately, usually don't work at all....

The problem is your BIOS, that tells Linux not to play with ASPM. You can override that using "pcie_aspm=force" in your kernel command line. It works very well in my notebook.
