My compiz is fluid with fglrx 10.6, with its latest 2d accleration.
When I enable vsync through the Ati control panel, at least I don't see any tearing. If I disable it, I definitely see tearing....
Well what I meant were, that it actually works with pulseaudio :-) All you have to do, is to select the right output (ATI hdmi) within the pulseaudio control-panel.
Do you use pulseaudio?
With ubuntu 10.04 sound over hdmi works fine with fglrx.

I had the same issue. You have to purge uninstall the old fglrx driver.
Then you have to completely remove /etc/ati and /usr/lib/fglrx
Now reinstall fglrx 10.6 and run sudo aticonfig --initial...

Just deactivate Catalyst A.I. and you will have the performance back.
