Problems gaming...

Every time I try and run a game through steam, eg CSS it loads fine but then the screen goes black and it goes back to the desktop. Is it my 2900GT or the ati drivers because it did load and run (quite slow mind) with my older 7900gs.

Do you have compiz or a 3D-Desktop in general running while gaming?
I need to admit that I'm no wine specialist and steam doesn't run quite smoothly as of yet on my machine.

Nope, desktop effects are disabled and compiz isn't installed. It must be something to do with the graphics card or the drivers but i'm not sure which.
