It is great that Java now can be distributed with Linux, but I really look forward to the day where the Java browser plugin also is distributed with Linux.

No,even though it's improving. Try http://www.goproblems.com/prob.php3?nutrial=1&plevel=0 for example... with really recent releases you can go a bit further than before but it won't allow you to go to the next page once the problem is solved. However for amd64 that's the only game in town since Sun never released a 64 bit Java plugin.
