You installed the Ubuntu desktop live ISO to a mem stick and you end up at a prompt? A Linux prompt? You don't get the graphical screen and language selection and choice of whether you want to install or try Ubuntu and all that?
Secondly, if you configure your BIOS to boot from USB first, you don't have to hit F8 to do so. F8 is to select the boot device, F1/F2/F10/DEL should be to go to the BIOS to configure it.
