Ubuntu's Live USB Disk Creator

Used USB Disk Creator and an empty stick, worked fine but....
I have to hold F8 on boot and when it shows the boot options
select USB and hit enter to continue boot.

But after much time all I end up with is command prompt.

Two different DL's of 8.10 and two different USB sticks.

Anyone have a clue? We have two laptops with dead CD/DVD drives.

You installed the Ubuntu desktop live ISO to a mem stick and you end up at a prompt? A Linux prompt? You don't get the graphical screen and language selection and choice of whether you want to install or try Ubuntu and all that?

Secondly, if you configure your BIOS to boot from USB first, you don't have to hit F8 to do so. F8 is to select the boot device, F1/F2/F10/DEL should be to go to the BIOS to configure it.

I do get the screen that allows for Live, Install, etc.
As soon as it appears the "language screen" covers it.
Enter clears that and then I select something, anything and
hit enter again. All is well and then I get a command prompt
or a popup that says reboot. Reboot is just wash, rinse, repeat.

Two DLs of 8.10, two different mem sticks, two different computers use
to try the install. Only Linux in this house. Voodoo?

In using Fedora's persistent USB key tool, the resulting boot-from-stick starts out fine, but after a large number of changes, the key begins to behave badly. I don't know if some necessary data is being bumped from the persistent overlay or what, but it renders the live USB key unusable. This happens either from changes inside the OS (like running a lot of updates or storing lots of files) or directly on the key (like using the key to store files outside of the OS).

Has anyone experienced this on the Ubuntu version?

Huh, all these problems with booting from USB makes me want to try it myself, I thought all of this was nailed down already. I'm curious if someone could try UNetBootin as well and let us all know under which program they had success with.
