Default AMD Catalyst 8.11 Linux Driver Released

Phoronix: AMD Catalyst 8.11 Linux Driver Released

In addition to announcing the Shanghai Quad-Core Opterons today, AMD has also released an updated Linux graphics driver. The AMD Catalyst 8.11 binary driver though doesn't have many Linux changes worth speaking about...

AMD also has yet to mention any X Server 1.5 support
Uhm, they do. From the RSS feed:
Driver version: 8.552 NEW FEATURES: (1) RHEL 4.7 support. (2) Display scaling to HDTV timings/resolutions. (3) Control Center option to display an ATI CrossFireX logo when ATI CrossFireX is enabled. (4) Xorg 7.4 (Xserver 1.5) support ISSUES RESOLVED: (1) Automatic power state changes when unplugging or plugging AC power. (2) Segmentation fault in amdcccle when launched as root under SuSE 11. (3) Corruption when playing videos using XvMC with mplayer. (4) X startup failure in dual-head mode with only one monitor connected. KNOWN ISSUE: (1) Installing the driver on Ubuntu systems using the community-supported Ubuntu packaging mechanism leads to a failure to load the kernel module resulting in 3D acceleration being disabled. Please install this driver release using the interactive installer instead.

    Question

The file on the Ati web-site seems to be corrupted.
It has a size of 15 Mb instead of 75.. Something is wrong there.

    Tried both links:

I tried this driver after many months of using xf86-video-ati and X freezes during startup.

After this, the system freezes with a blank screen (magic sysrq still works). On my first try, it froze right after loading libvbe and "(EE) fglrx(0): vm86() syscall generated signal 11." was the last entry in the log.

The driver installs fine and the module loads without error, but I didn't investigate further, because I'm sticking with the open source driver anyway.

    EDIT: this is on a PCI-E x1950pro.
