I tried this driver after many months of using xf86-video-ati and X freezes during startup.

After this, the system freezes with a blank screen (magic sysrq still works). On my first try, it froze right after loading libvbe and "(EE) fglrx(0): vm86() syscall generated signal 11." was the last entry in the log.
The driver installs fine and the module loads without error, but I didn't investigate further, because I'm sticking with the open source driver anyway.
EDIT: this is on a PCI-E x1950pro.
