Windows works for most people. I've yet to see someone not being able to watch videos. What you describe is not common. The graphics problems on Linux on the other hand *are* common.

Oh you would be astonished what kinds of troubles with Windows I had seen in support. This goes down to failing graphic boards jolting the user ( I experience this at times to, ATI graphics board here ) to 640x480 4bit mode and requiring a restart ( if you can manage to find the windows button in the color mess ). No Windows is home to a hell of driver related ( and software related ) problems. It's just overlooked whereas on Linux people moan, which is incorrect.

Servers are a niche market.

If this would be true you would not be able to write here a post. Seriously the Internet is one of the biggest assembly of computers users are working with in the entire world... and majority is running Un*x.

Embedded is a niche market.

If this would be true only a handful of companies would specialize on them but anybody does. Cell phones for example are embedded systems and every man and his dog has a cell phone nowadays. If that's a niche market then I'm Santa Clause

Netbooks are a niche market.

Major players in the computer market ( HP, Acer and so forth ) sell netbooks. They would not if this would be a niche market.

Gamehand helds are a niche market.

NDS and PSP as the most sold handhelds ( even more than palmtops or PDAs how they are called correctly ). There are again major players ( HP and company ) in the PDA market so that's definitely no niche market.

Desktop use is not a niche market.

The only point you got right in this post... you need to improve

For those not knowing ( aka you ) what a niche market is here the defintion:
A business that focuses on a niche market is addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream providers.
See the point? "focus" and "mainstream providers". A company serving a niche market is the only one doing so since the others don't care or can't compete there.

That IS a niche market. It is not your average consumer it is sold to. It is aimed at service providers and corporate customers.

All of these you point out are aimed at a specific device that fills a specific need. That is niche!!! Netbooks are the only thing close to not being niche as their capabilites can be used for many things but still are very limited.

Have you ANY idea about economics man? Jesus long time since I heard such bullshit. A niche market is not defined by being a product only a customer ( aka B2C ) does buy it's a service either a customer ( B2C ) or another business ( B2B ) is acquiring. Hell there is even A2C and A2B and this is not even remotely niche. B2C is just a small part of the entire economic system.

Now about what is niche market and what not. A niche market is not something that is used for only one single purpose. You totally mixed up definitions there. A niche market is a specific service ( a real service or a product ) that one company ( or maybe a few more ) alone does provide. No main stream company is providing a similar service. This is not about how universal the service is it is about how many and who does provide this service that defines what is a niche market.

Please look up definitions ( or get in touch with "real" economics ) before honking out such bull and making a big fuzz.
