Andrew: expect about ~35 fps with your current rig, with some massive maps (like ONS-Dinoria) going all the way down to ~20 fps. I have a P4C 2.6 GHz, GeForce 6600 GT, 512 MB RAM.

If you're going for a high end system, why not get a Core 2 Duo? They're cheaper and faster than AMD equivalents (...for now).

I'll go AMD if 4x4 turns out to be a great system with an easy upgrade path to 2x Quad Core, otherwise I'll switch camps and get myself an Intel Core 2 Quad...(2.66x4 = emerge damn quick!)

I'm going to sit back and watch the processor war for a while, have to see how AMD go with their 65nm process and which has the most grunt. I'm not going to upgrade my mobo/processor in the next 6 months - but when I do I'm wanting a combined core speed of 10Ghz!

I have a similar rig to your PC1 Andrew, and I'm in the same boat. When I look at the small decrease in encoding time in benchmarks I just don't see the need to upgrade... unless it's humongous, like 10Ghz.

However having the ability to have hardware assisted Virtualization is a BIG Bonus. This right now cannot be done with a conventional Socket 939. with the AM2 this is possible. Also having the ability to move up to DDR2 and Quad Cores is another bonus. the 939 has come to an end. However AM2 is VERY Affordable. Much more affordable than an Intel Platform.

No need for vmware. run on a native Xen Kernel.

Good Question.. That I am not too sure of. When the server test of that new opteron board get released I wonder Michael can you do a test on this? Compare it to the Woodcrest platform?

I know I have been looking for tests on this platform using Xen but to no avail.

As mentioned in a different thread, soon there will be performance results from various chips using both AMD's Pacifica and Intel's VT with Xen performance.

That's why I'm forcing myself to wait. I don't want to grab a 4200+ (939 2x2.2Ghz) and not be blown out of the water...right now the only thing working my CPU is folding@home, and PC2 gets the occasional mysql query thrown at it (rainbow tables yum yum!)

Looks like a UT2007 demo may be out soon! Hopefully a Linux demo is delivered at the same time as the Windows demo

We are definitely planning to release a demo long enough before we go gold to be able to incorporate feedback from the demo into our final release.
