I don't think the radeon driver should limit you to 1024x768; if you want to pastebin your log and dmesg output from radeon we can probably get that running on Slackware more easily.
I'm attempting to use the proprietary ATI driver with my x86 GNU/Linux Slackware 12.2 system with a Radeon Xpress 200 integrated in the mainboard.
I can use the system with the "radeon" driver which comes with the distro, however this only allows me to use 1024x768 -- I want to use 1280x1024, thus I installed the proprietary ATI driver.
The installation works, however when I attempt to start X, the display turns black, the monitor says the signal is out of range, and the system is unable to reset, ctrl+alt+backspace does not work, none of the console terminals are possible to switch to, and the computer stops responding to ICMP echos -- i.e. I'm assuming it has received a kernel panic.
If I attempt X -configure after installing the driver the procedure will fail with the error:
Backtrace:
0: X(xf86SigHandler+0x73) [0x80d8b5e]
1: [0xffffe400]
2: X(DoConfigure+0x210) [0x80bddd0]
3: X(InitOutput+0x61a) [0x80a1f7a]
4: X(main+0x296) [0x806dbb6]
5: /lib/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe0) [0xb7e4d390]
6: X(FontFileCompleteXLFD+0x20d) [0x806d121]
I have to uninstall the fglrx driver for X -configure to work again -- as such I'm assuming that as X atttempts to use fglrx to test the X server it crashes, but does not cause a kernel panic when only using X -configure, whereas startx or runlevel 4 causes a kernel panic.
I've tried numbers different versions of the driver now, including the most recent one, and very old ones.
Any ideas?

I agree, the radeon driver shouldn't limit me to 1024x768, I have tried quite a few different combinations; either X won't start as there are no usable screens available, or it will start but give:
"(EE) RADEON(0): Using VGA default."
