Phoronix: Announcing PTS Desktop Live 2009.3

It has been no secret that we have been working to create our own Linux distribution that is designed to run off a Live DVD/USB device and would provide a standardized free software stack for running hardware benchmarks whether you are a computer review web-site like us, an independent hardware vendor interested in seeing how well their hardware performs on Linux, or just a hobbyist wishing to compare your system's performance against that of your friends. We first shared our plans for this a few months ago when talking about driving Linux-based benchmarking with Sandtorg (a.k.a. Phoronix Test Suite 2.0). We also briefly mentioned this Linux OS again last week when providing a detailed guide to Phoronix Test Suite 2.0, but today we are formally announcing PTS Desktop Live 2009.3 (codenamed "Gernlinden"). PTS Desktop Live is being released as a free download in tandem with the release of Phoronix Test Suite 2.0 on the 4th of August.

Isn't there a worse performance if you test on a live-cd environment compared to a installed operating system?

Well, 2GB at a minimum... Probably the first test suite for supercomputers...

32 bit version too would be a great idea.

There are 2 ways actually, small computers for business, and web, and super 64bit computers for hardgamers and miniservers.

Linux is faster in low cost computers, and is less used as desktop system in gamers computers, because Dx is beating Ogl and MS WOS graphic drivers are better than X-Windows ones, even in opengl.

And to put a computer (perhaps a brand can sponsor it) as a reference in all tests (100, 1000 or any number) then each test can be referenced to a specific machine. other way of making this is to put several brand machines as Apple , Dell, Asus, Lenovo, or HP ones, and the ability to set any of them as base 1000 index.

And of course a combined test number as 3dmark or future mark test and a web page where upload and compare our results, then there some advertisements.

Once the system is loaded, everything is on ram so normaly no, if things are done correctly being on a CD or HD doesn't matter, but I don't know how they manage to make sql tests etc on the HD

Since all hardware getting out in the futur will be 64bitz capable so distributions as windows and mac should go to 64bit versions only.

This would solve lots of problems with drivers and would force the migration.

It just hit me that this is a "live" distribution, which makes it *very* useful indeed. Thanks for all the hard work that went into this.
